GRRRLS with HEART was founded by Rhonda Eldridge to give teenage girls the tools to find their authentic voice and empower themselves through artistic exploration. We spend two weeks in Northern, VA, working in various mediums to create a piece of theater that is then shown in the Capital Fringe Festival, then throughout the year we participate in monthly calls and artistic prompts. The program also provides an introduction to Nonviolent Communication (NVC), taught by a certified NVC facilitator. This organization is run by strong women who aim to encourage and empower young women to take a stand and make an difference in their communities.
What is a GRRRL?GRRRL references riot grrrl, which was a feminist punk movement that began in Olympia, Washington in the early 1990s. The riot grrrls worked to create a safe space for girls and women to express themselves and speak per their standards and not the standards of society or men. This was a tight knit, inclusive community that used music and other art forms as an outlet for female empowerment. It is often seen as the beginning of third-wave feminism. GRRRLS with HEART strives to maintain the core values of riot grrrls, to allow girls to create art through mediums that allow for clear communication and inclusion, and to empower young women to use their own voice. |
What is Nonviolent Communication?Nonviolent Communication (NVC) was founded by Marshall Rosenberg and is based on historic principles of nonviolence. NVC encourages people to hear their own deeper needs and the needs of others. Through the values of NVC, we learn to clarify what we are observing in ourselves in others, seeing what emotions we are feeling, what values we want to live by, and what we want to ask of ourselves and others.
WHat is HEART?HEART is an acronym that comes from the Center for Nonviolent Communication. It stands for Harmony, Ease, Authenticity, Respect, and Trust. We at GRRRLS with HEART strive to have HEART in all aspects in our lives.
